Name: Royal Doulton Type: Royal Doulton Voortrekker-Eeufees Commemorative Plate Year: Circa 1938 Set: No Mark: Royal Doulton - Royal Doulton, Made in England, exclusively for Gebr. Lazar, Pretoria History: This historically significant commemorative plate was issued by Royal Doulton to mark the Voortrekker Centenary Festival (“Voortrekker-Eeufees”) held in 1938 in Pretoria and Blood River, South Africa. Commissioned exclusively for Gebr. Lazar, the design features a brown transferware scene of the Zulu attack on a laager, encircled by portraits of prominent Voortrekker figures such as Andries Pretorius and Piet Retief. The border includes dates and banners reflecting 16 December 1838, a key moment in Afrikaner history (Battle of Blood River). A fine piece of colonial-era ceramic propaganda and patriotic memory, this plate is a notable example of early 20th-century commemorative ware made for the South African market. In good condition, these pieces retain interest among collectors of Royal Doulton, Boer War memorabilia, and Africana. Flaws: None
