Three Ships - Crossed batons with no accompanying text

$20.00Price
Name: Three Ships

Type: The Three Ships Pin Dishes (Set of 2)

Year: Circa 1950s–1960s

Set: Yes ( 2x Pin Dishes)

Mark: Crossed batons with no accompanying text - Likely Crown Ducal or an associated Staffordshire maker (based on the crossed batons backstamp)

History: These small porcelain dishes (often used as pin trays, ashtrays, or souvenir dishes) display a classic British maritime motif: "The Three Ships", a popular reference tied to carols, heraldry, and seafaring tradition. The transfer-printed designs feature stylized galleons under sail, printed in blue and brown respectively.

The crossed batons backstamp, without accompanying identifiers, is attributed to various English potteries—most notably Crown Ducal and some mid-century Staffordshire makers who utilized this type of backmark on lower-value souvenirware or export ceramics.

These pieces show signs of being mass-produced touristware rather than fine porcelain. Still, they offer a charming glimpse into post-war British ceramics and are collectible for their nautical theme, especially in sets or multiples.
