Mark: Rosenthal - Rosenthal Porcelain, Selb, Bavaria, Germany.

History: This is a lidded porcelain potpourri or powder jar made by Rosenthal, a renowned German porcelain manufacturer. The mark “Rosenthal Selb-Bavaria Sanssouci” appears clearly on the underside of the base, identifying the maker and model.

The pattern features the Sanssouci shape—a Rococo-inspired mould with ornate relief work—adorned with hand-painted floral sprays and heavy gold gilding. The floral decoration includes pink roses, orange blooms, and bluebells with leaf garlands, all hand-painted over raised gilded detailing.

Based on the Rosenthal backstamp with “Selb-Bavaria” and the Sanssouci model, this piece dates to between 1934 and 1956. This version of the green underglaze mark with the crown and crossed lines was used prominently in that era.

The maker is Rosenthal Porcelain, Selb, Bavaria, Germany. The "Sanssouci" pattern was named after the Rococo palace of Frederick the Great and reflects the opulence and refinement of that architectural style. It was among Rosenthal’s most celebrated baroque revival forms.

The estimated value (USD) is $120–$180

The value reflects the intricate gilding, condition, and desirability of the Sanssouci pattern, especially in lidded vessels or vanity items. Prices can rise if sold as part of a dressing table set or with original inserts.

This Rosenthal “Sanssouci” lidded jar is a fine example of mid-20th-century Bavarian porcelain influenced by 18th-century French Rococo. The heavy relief-moulded surface, detailed with gold tracery and hand-applied floral sprays, gives the piece a rich texture and visual depth. The floral decoration is well-executed, with vibrant, naturalistic brushstrokes over a creamy white glaze. At approximately 9–10 cm tall, its compact form would have originally served as a powder jar or potpourri holder on a lady’s dressing table. The gilding shows some wear, particularly near the lid edges, consistent with gentle use or handling over the decades, though it retains strong aesthetic appeal. The inclusion of the underglaze green Rosenthal mark paired with red painter’s and decorator’s marks confirms its authenticity and hand-finished nature. Collectors of German porcelain and decorative vanity items will find this a desirable addition, particularly due to the prestige of the Sanssouci form.
