History: This whimsical mid-century figurine depicts a playful elf or pixie with bright red boots and hat, lounging in a carefree pose. The hand-painted facial expression and high-gloss glaze are typical of Japanese novelty ceramics from the 1950s. Although unmarked, the fine crazing and sculpting details point to export ware made for the Western market. These were popular as playful ornaments or shelf decor in the postwar era. This little fellow adds a touch of retro charm and is a fine example of collectible kitsch.
