History: This is a novelty ceramic jug produced by Sandland Pottery (Hanley, Staffordshire, England), designed in the shape of a closed book with a Milanese knight’s helmet from 1560 as a decorative gold transfer. Sandland is well known for its novelty ceramics—especially book-shaped jugs and teapots—popular during the mid-20th century. The glaze color (olive green) and the crisp molded “spine” detailing evoke a classic book form.

The helmet decoration references a Milanese style of armor, adding a historical and collectible twist for enthusiasts of armory or book-themed décor. The spout is integrated at the top edge, and the overall look is both quirky and functional. The “Sandland Hanley Staffordshire Made in England” mark on the base places this within the classic era for Sandland production, roughly the 1960s to 1970s.
