History: This is a tall Japanese Kutani porcelain vase, decorated in the characteristic cobalt blue ground with overglaze enamel and gilt accents. The design prominently features a pair of long-tailed phoenix-like birds perched among stylized cherry blossoms, rendered in raised enamels and outlined with gilding. The form is a straight-sided cylindrical vase with a slight flare at the lip.

The decorative motif features a traditional Japanese kacho-ga (bird-and-flower) scene, with sakura (cherry blossom) branches and what appears to be hō-ō (phoenix) or onagadori-style birds, both frequent subjects in Kutani ware. The neck is finished with a foliate and scrollwork band in green, white, and gold over the dark blue ground.

Circa 1970s–1980s, based on the gold-on-blue “Kutani” mark with both kanji (九谷) and Roman letters. This modern Kutani export mark style became common in the postwar mid-to-late 20th century, especially during the Japanese porcelain export boom of the Showa era.

Kutani is a historical porcelain production region in Ishikawa Prefecture. While the specific kiln or studio isn't listed, this style is consistent with mass-produced yet high-quality decorative export vases of the later Showa period.

The Piece is estimated at approximately $60–$90 USD, depending on condition and market. Pieces in excellent condition with sharp gilding and no chips or crazing may command prices towards the higher end, especially in pairs or with boxed provenance.

This cobalt-ground Kutani vase exemplifies the vibrant and heavily ornamental aesthetic that characterized Japanese export porcelain during the 20th century. Its elongated form, saturated blue glaze, and applied gold enamel work reflect both traditional Japanese motifs and Western market preferences for rich, visually striking décor. The raised detailing on the birds and blossoms displays a good level of craftsmanship, with crisp outlines and multi-colour enameling.

The base bears the common “Kutani” mark in gold within a rectangle, used widely on export wares from the mid-20th century onward. There is no specific studio name, which is typical for commercial Kutani items sold for decorative use abroad. The lack of crazing and the retention of gilding around the neck and rim suggest this piece was likely displayed rather than used. At approximately 30 cm in height (based on the scale reference), it would make an ideal mantle or shelf feature, either standalone or as part of a paired set.

Collectors of Japanese export ware, as well as those drawn to avian and floral designs in enamel, would find this a representative and attractive example of modern Kutani artistry.
