History: This is a cream-colored earthenware commemorative jug produced by Crown Devon (Fieldings) for the Empire Exhibition held in Johannesburg, South Africa, between September 1936 and January 1937. The exhibition was a significant colonial showcase for the British Empire, and such ceramics were commonly sold as souvenirs.
The jug features:
A stylized springbok (the national animal of South Africa) mid-leap, labeled "South Africa Johannesburg Sept. 1936 – Jan. 1937".On the reverse, a detailed transfer-printed badge of the Empire Exhibition with a red protea (South Africa’s national flower) and bilingual inscriptions in English and Afrikaans ("Empire Exhibition / Ryks Tentoonstelling").The backstamp reads: Crown Devon / Fieldings / Made in England, a known mark for Fielding & Co. used from the 1930s onward.
It exhibits classic Crown Devon traits—bright glazes, finely crackled crazing, and Art Deco influence in shape and color use. These jugs are frequently collected both for their design and historical relevance.
Condition Note: The crazing is even and expected for its age; the color remains strong and decals are well-preserved.
