History: This is a lidded butter or cheese dish, square-shaped with a rectangular underplate and a domed cover featuring a stylized sunburst knob. The transfer pattern features vibrant cobalt blue and gold scrollwork, with hand-painted details and a fine gold trim, a style popular in British tableware of the interwar and postwar years. The base is clearly marked "CREAMPETAL" above the Grindley ship logo, confirming the pattern and maker.

W.H. Grindley & Co. was an English pottery established in 1880 in Tunstall, Staffordshire. The Creampetal mark, featuring the ship, dates this piece to roughly the late 1930s to early 1950s, prior to the company’s merger and rebranding.

There is visible wear to the gold and blue enameling and some glaze staining. The underplate shows a glaze flaw or small kiln hole (visible in your closeup). These are consistent with age and regular use.

Grindley’s Creampetal line was made in large quantities but is now sought after for its Art Deco and early Mid-century appeal. Lidded cheese/butter dishes in this pattern, when in good vintage condition, typically fetch $25–$40 USD on the collector’s market, depending on condition and completeness.
