History: This commemorative Wedgwood plate honours the historic discovery of the Coelacanth (Latimeria chalumnae) in 1938 off the coast of South Africa. Rendered in classic pale blue jasperware with finely applied white bas-relief, it features the fossil fish at centre and shell embellishments around the rim. The reverse inscription references the East London Museum, home to the type specimen. In excellent condition with clear markings, this piece is a collector's item of scientific and South African heritage interest. A fine decorative plate for both Wedgwood and natural history enthusiasts.
