History: This is a striking hand-painted ceramic plate featuring an abstract, mid-century modernist design of a stylized human figure reaching toward a bird. The use of bold geometric segments in saturated blue, yellow, black, green, and rust-red glazes is reminiscent of postwar European and American modernist ceramics, likely inspired by the Bauhaus or Picasso-esque abstraction popular during the 1950s and 1960s.
 
 
The reverse is marked 5381/41 and HAND PAINTED, with no clear maker’s name. This type of numbering is typical of West German or Italian studio ceramics of the period. The back appears to be unglazed stoneware, further supporting European postwar origin, though a few British and Scandinavian studios used similar marking styles.
 
Flaws: Some bubbling on the plate from the firing process
